- 3 cups sugar
- 2 squares bitter chocolate
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 3/4 cup water
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- pinch of cream of tartar
- Put sugar and water in saucepan.
- Grate in chocolate.
- Cook over medium fire, stirring frequently until mixture boils.
- Add cream of tarter.
- Cook until soft ball forms in cold water.
- Remove from stove, add butter.
- Cool until lukewarm.
- Add vanilla and beat until candy crumbles.
- Scoop out onto greased plate and mold into long loaf.
- Cut into pieces.
- Nuts may be added to the mixture, or halves may be pressed into the pieces after they are cut.
