Fudge Cake

  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 2 squares unsweetened chocolate
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 cup sour milk or butter milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  1. Melt shortening in top of double boiler; add chocolate which has been cut in small pieces.
  2. When chocolate is melted add water and sugar; stir until well blended; remove from heat and allow to cool thoroughly.
  3. Sift flour, measure, add salt and baking powder, sift together.
  4. When chocolate mixture is cooled add egg, unbeaten; mix well. Then add sifted dry ingredients; blend well.
  5. Dissolve soda in sour milk or buttermilk and add to batter.
  6. Add vanilla.
  7. Pour into pan 8x8x2 inches greased and lined with wax paper; bake in moderate oven (350°) for 30 to 35 minutes.
  8. When done invert on wire rack, remove paper while hot.
  • Spread with chocolate fudge frosting and top with walnut halves.
  • May be cut in 9, 12 or 16 servings.
